LADY CRUSHERS REMAIN PERFECT

[sixcol_five_last]

PRESS RELEASE – The dck Masters pulled off a few quality shots in the final minutes but were unable to unseat the Doosan Lady Crushers from the undefeated throne of the 2012 Bud Light Women’s 7-A-Side Soccer League Sunday at the Guam Football Association facility in Harmon.

The Lady Crushers played one of its closest games of the season, holding off a persistent Masters team 4-3 to stay atop league standings.

Although the league leaders trudged ahead with an early 2-0 advantage in the first half off goals from Kim Sherman and Kristin Thompson, the Masters were able to knot the score before the halftime whistle. Rhoda Bamba scored the Masters’ first goal after connecting on an assist from Pauline Toves, who set up the play after stealing the ball from the Lady Crushers’ Simie Willter. Moments later, Jamie Skornia scored the equalizer after finishing a pass from Christine Simard following a free kick taken by Cheri Stewart.

Sherman reclaimed the lead for the Lady Crushers early in the second half on a breakaway that drew out the Masters’ second-half goalkeeper Skornia from the box. After avoiding a few defenders, Sherman found an opening to take her shot to give her team the 3-2 lead. Minutes later, Sherman completed her hat trick with a header off a corner kick.

Despite a string of aggressive, close-range shots in the final minutes of play, the Masters were only able to score one when Bamba finished a pass from Jaime Fahy before the final whistle.

In other matches, current second-place team Hyundai survived a first-half scare by the Paintco Lady Strykers and eventually emerged with a 4-2 victory.

Hyundai’s Shana Spindel struck first, but the Lady Strykers took control of the first half moments later. The Lady Strykers’ Alexy Barbe equalized the game with a header that lobbed just enough over Hyundai’s goalkeeper Erlissa Delfin and rolled into the goal. Later, Caroline Quigley made it a 2-1 half in favor of the Lady Strykers, but that was all the team could manage, as the second half belonged to Hyundai.

Although Spindel needed close to 20 minutes into the deciding half to come through for her team again, her long-range missile that sailed into the upper part of the goal sparked a Hyundai run that included two more goals and a saved penalty kick. In the 51st minute, Spindel sent a pass to Arisa Recella, who took a shot from the left side that slid past Lady Strykers’ keeper Sonja Sanchez.

An aggressive defensive play by Hyundai about six minutes later prompted a penalty kick for the Lady Strykers, but Delfin redeemed herself by stopping Barbe’s shot before the ball crossed the line. Almost immediately after, Ashley Besagar carried the ball up field and passed the ball to Raven Aguon, who took a shot from the right side for the final score.
In the day’s other game, Quality Distributors blanked Pika Soccer Club 5-0. Paige Surber and teammate Billie Reyes each scored twice for Quality. The team’s other goal came off a Pika SC own goal in the second half.

League action continues Sunday with Pika SC taking on the Lady Strykers at 3:30 p.m. on Lower Field A at the GFA facility in Harmon. Hyundai plays the dck Masters on the same field at 4:45 p.m., while Guam Shipyard takes on the Lady Crushers at the same time on Lower Field B.
