SHARKS PIN DOWN FRIARS

[sixcol_five_last]

The defending champion Sanchez Sharks wrestling team are still the favorites to win the 2012 wrestling title and they put it all on display Wednesday night against the FD Friars beating them with a convincing score, 44-21.

The Friars were garnering an undefeated streak heading into the meet but now drop to 3-1 after the loss while the Sharks reclaim the top spot at 3-1 after an early season forfeit to the Southern Dolphins. Sharks coach Tony Aquino was happy with the win but expected a different turnout on the score card.

“Overall, not to sound overconfident but we didn’t expect much to be honest. This actually ended up to be a little closer than I thought it was going to be, I found the match kind of funny,” stated Aquino.

When asked if there were any intriguing matches heading into the meet that he had an asterisk on, Aquino held nothing back in calling out Friars All-Island National prospect Micah Lopez in the 170 lb. division.

“I was hoping that one of their top wrestlers who represents Guam nationally would go up against one of our guys who is our captain, you know, a ‘captain vs captain’ matchup but it doesn’t always turn out that way. I figured he would want to have a battle between an all-island wrestler and not a bronze medalist, that’s like me picking a fight with a fly. I wanted that match but I didn’t get it but I’m fine, we had to double forfeit the 170 division.”

Lopez had doctors clearance to drop to the 160 lb. division, where he defeated Sharks Vince Charfauros by decision 10-5.

The Sharks will be at home against the Geckos this Saturday while the Friars will host the Southern Dolphins.
