PRESS RELEASE – Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) pulls out all the stops once more with their announcement that Legendary Mixed Martial Arts Referee and icon of the sport, Big John McCarthy, will be in Guam this week to referee the August 9th event at The UOG Field House in Mangilao.

“Our mission is to showcase the best talent from the Asia-Pacific region and showcase MMA stars of the future. Icons of the sport such as Big John McCarthy have inspired and helped educate PXC fighters on how to compete in the highest level of MMA in the world,” stated PXC’s CEO, E.J. Calvo. Calvo added, “This will be “Big John’s” third PXC event to referee. The level of professionalism and expertise he brings to our organization and event is part of our growth plan to be one of the best professional MMA organizations in the world.”

McCarthy will also work closely with the Guam Unarmed Combat Commission and will conduct meetings with fighters and other officials in order to share his vast experience in the sport. He has been a part of the growth of MMA as the one of the biggest sports world-wide today.

McCarthy is also the founder of C.O.M.M.A.N.D., the training and certification school for MMA referees and judges.

McCarthy was quoted, “This will be my first visit to the Guam, and I am very excited about being a part of this PXC event. I also look forward to seeing how MMA has grown is growing, and PXC has done a great job cultivating the sport.”

This will be McCarthy’s 3rd PXC event to attend and referee, with prior events being in Manila, Philippines…and his first ever visit to Guam. Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
