The first ever “These Colors Run” 5k brought a big crowd for a unique Saturday morning run at the Triple J main branch in upper Tumon. In compliance with the Guam Cancer Care’s “Join The Fight” pledge, Triple J teamed up to raise the awareness of cancer on Guam.
A special type of red and yellow “Holi” powder, made of cornstarch, was being tossed around in the beginning of the race as well as towards the end. Runners were advised to wear a white shirt to really capture the spirit of the run as the colored powder would make its mark.
The event organizers encouraged runners to embrace the colors to take home their stained shirts as their trophies.
Crossing the finish line first with the unofficial time of 17:41 was Ryan Matinezo.
“I wanted to come out and just have fun and I knew there was going to be a lot of people and it felt good participating in Guam’s first colors run. I had no idea I was going to be first because I knew there were faster runners here,” said Matienzo with a surprised look. “When I was crossing the finish line though I knew I was first because when I looked back I saw no one behind me.”
For the females, Vanessa Matlcok finished first with an unofficial time of 20: (and change).
“This was an awesome event, this was a great way to get out to the community with Guam’s first colors run. This run was for a great cause, and the color red is awesome,” Matlock said with a smile.
After such a successful outing, this will surly not be the last colors run on Guam.
Official times coming soon!
