In a battle of the undefeated, the JFK Islanders and the Southern High Dolphins faced off in IIAAG girls high school soccer action at the GW field Thursday afternoon. Behind last year’s league MVP Paige Surber’s two goals, the Dolphins walked away with a 2-0 win.

Early in the second half, an Islanders defender committed a foul in the box, giving the Dolphins a penalty kick. Paige Surber knocked in a grounder to the bottom left corner of the goal.

Surber struck again in the 47th minute, shooting in a loose ball from about 40 yards out. The play happened so fast and unexpectedly, the ball landed in the wide-open goal to boost their lead to 2-0.

The Dolphins continued to put pressure on the Islander defense, but the Islanders keeper kept composure making a lot of saves in the latter part of the game.

Despite, the loss the Islanders proved to be tough opponents as the first half ended without a score. Though holding the defending champs scoreless, the Dolphins were still able to get some good looks at the goal. In a sister to sister connection, Paige and Zoe Surber connected on a corner kick, however the elder sister aimed too high above the cross bar.

“Work hard, train hard, play hard. Southern plays with so much heart, that’s all I ask of these girls and they give me just that,” said Paige Surber about their undefeated record.

Under the pressure of defending a championship, Paige Surber tells her team to, “Stay humble, stay on your toes. Anyone can anytime come up and surprise us and take that away, but we’re just going to prepare ourselves.”

The Dolphins improve to 4-0 while the Islanders drop to 3-1.
