The undefeated Sharks boys wrestling team were the fan favorites of the season, but that didn’t intimidate the Friars.
The Friars stepped up big time to show they are not one to be underestimated and they proved it by handing the Sharks their first loss of the season, beating them with a score of 44-31 at the Sanchez gym.
With every match showing the same amount of difficulty, the fastest match of the night came pretty close. It lasted a bit more than a minute and it came from the 132 lb. division between Sanchez’ Peter Benavente and FD’s Jaione Villegas. Benavente went for a shoot for the knee and got the near fall. Villegas gets put on his back and tries to escape but couldn’t as Benavente gets the pin in 1:25.
Out of 14 matches held today, only one match had a tech fall, which was from the 120 lb. Division with Sanchez’s Damian Fitial and FD’s Leonard Calvo. Leonard took control of the match by coming with numerous near falls and takedowns, which rallied up the score to 15-0, giving FD match win.
Every match was equally exhilarating to watch with surprising reversals and surprising takedowns from both teams. But the fan favorite of the night had to be from the 182 lb. Division between Sanchez’s Vince Charfauros versus FD’s Leonardo Tedela. It all came to the 2nd round when Tuledo tried to go for a comeback after the great start from Charfauros.
Both wrestlers were showing anxiousness for a pin by pushing each other after a whistle. In the last 20 seconds of the 3rd round, Tuledo gets two late escapes to tie the score. Being neutral on the 5 second mark, Charfauros gave away his open knee again as Tuledo gets the final take down to break the tie right before the sounding of the buzzer. The match lasted for 6 minutes with Tuledo getting the 8-6 win for FD.
Both teams gave a good show tonight but it was a little push that gave FD the edge. FD improves to 5-1 and Sanchez suffers their first loss making them 4-1.
