The weather was not ideal, but the George Washington Geckos made it happen as they dominated the John F. Kennedy Islanders 24-5 in IIAAG Girls softball Wednesday at the GW field in Mangilao.
The Islanders were aggressive in the first inning behind a strong RBI double from Criscia Cali that would bring home Hiromi Atem making the Islanders first to score at 1-0. Loyola Rivera would sacrifice an out so that Ciara Cali would score putting the Islanders ahead three to zero at the top of the first.
That would be the last time JFK would have the lead as GW came out guns blazing. Coleen Quinata hit a sweet single into left field to start things off for the Geckos. Tiana Perez would follow on the ensuing play with a RBI double. Both would score after an error made by the defense cutting the lead 3-2 at the bottom of the first.
Things started to pick up with the Geckos piling up on the scoreboard later after an RBI single from Leandra Castro putting the home team ahead 11-3, still at the bottom of the first.
The game was paused for a bit during the second inning due to heavy downpour in the area. But as soon as things cleared up GW picked up the pace. Quinata, Perez, and Wynette Takeo stole home on three consecutive plays off of pitching errors putting the Geckos ahead 16-4.
“Our offense was on today,” said Quinata as the Geckos found the sweet spot on many occasions putting the Islanders away early in the game.
Errors seemed to be the problem for the Islanders, as they looked loss without starting pitcher Audrey George who is currently off-island. The Geckos played a solid game defensively behind six Ks thrown by Ritanna Pocaigue.
With the win, the Geckos extend their winning streak to three games as they look ready to make a deep run in the playoffs that begin next week.
