Coming off of a tough loss to the Guam High Panthers, the George Washington Geckos regrouped and took care of business as they defeated the Okkodo Bulldogs 11-1 Wednesday evening at the GW field. The game was cut to five innings due to the ten-run rule.
A stingy defense was all the Geckos needed to set the tone and take over the game. Ritanna Pocaigue led the way for the Geckos as she threw eight K’s making it tough for the Bulldogs to get on base.
Celeene Mendiola and Krysta Jesus were able to steal home after errors made by the Okkodo defense putting the Geckos up 4-1 at the bottom of the first. Errors seemed to be a big problem for Okkodo as the Geckos were able to score on multiple occasions.
Ritanna Pocaigue hit a strong RBI triple deep into right field at the bottom of the fourth inning. On the next play Marchelle Manabat hit a RBI single that would bring Pocaigue home making the score 7-1.
The Bulldogs were first to get on the scoreboard after Kristian Pangalinan stole home off a error made by the Geckos’ defense at the top of the first inning. This would be one of the few errors that GW would make all afternoon.
In the bottom of the fifth the Geckos took over and closed out the Bulldogs after Pocaigue hit a RBI double that would bring in Coleen Quinata and Tiana Perez making the score 11-1 thus ending the game.
“It feels good to win coming off of a tough loss,” said Pocaigue. “We’re just trying to win our way to the championship,” added Pocaigue when asked of the Geckos’ plans for the remainder of the season.
