In the opening weekend of the inaugural Heineken 15’s Rugby League, the Lions and the Ryderz faced off in their first game of the month-long tournament. Though playing in the heat of the day, the action never stopped as both teams kept up the hard hitting and the aggressive play throughout the entire game.
Though the Lions led 20-0 at the half, the four try lead did not discourage Ryderz Paul Estaquio. Estaquio displayed his speed after racing down the sideline for a 65-yard try in the opening minutes of the second period.
Lions’ Carlton Marshall answered back diving into the try zone for their first of five tries in the half. Stephen Sablan followed with a try of his own weaving through three defenders to get to the try zone.
The Ryderz brought the ball down field allowing Vince Campos to score their second and last try of the game.
The Lions’ big prop Johnny Borja found the ground amongst a pile of players making the score 35-10.
Art Toves looked to score for the Ryders dribbling the ball down field, but the last touch was a little too hard as the ball rolled out of bounds.
Rob Leon Guerrero looked to score breaking away from the defense, however, Toves was able to push Leon Guerrero out of bounds at the one-yard line. After a broken play off the Ryderz’ line out, Leon Guerrero eventually came up with the ball and scored the last try of the game.
In the first half, Will Williams put points up on the board first for the Lions. Matt Sablan followed with two tries to increase their lead to 15-0. Ryan Claros placed down for a try right before half time.
In the earlier game of the day the Chiefs and Da Dok tied 5-5.
