PRESS RELEASE – The converging of Guam Shipyard defenders in front of their goal had the reverse effect, as an own goal in the 85th minute was the eventual winning goal for Table 35 Espada FC in Division I action of the Budweiser Soccer League at the Guam Football Association National Training Center.
Shipyard needed a win Sunday evening to stay in first place in the league standings and dropped to second behind Quality Distributors following the loss. Table 35 remains in third place with the win.
Shipyard gained the upper hand early when Ashton Surber finished a pass from teammate Don Weakley in the 4th minute. Surber added another goal just over 15 minutes later for the 2-0 advantage.
Table 35’s T.J. Atalig later was credited with his team’s lone first-half goal, taking the last touch off of a free kick that ricocheted off the goal post and defenders in the 28th minute. Both teams continued the high intensity through the half, playing almost 20 minutes of fast-paced, scoreless soccer before the halftime whistle.
Ian Mariano scored the equalizer just three minutes into the deciding half and another three minutes later, gave Table 35 a 3-2 lead with a beautifully arched free kick that escaped the reach of Shipyard’s keeper Kalen Lizama.
Shipyard’s Marcus Lopez evened the game in the 63rd minute, taking a cross from Surber and shooting past Table 35 goalie Joe Laanan.
The game remained at 3-all until the 85th minute, when Table 35’s Nick Roberto came barreling in from the left side with a shot toward the goal. A Shipyard defender attempted to trap Roberto’s shot, but the ball managed to roll into the goal. Shipyard couldn’t find an answer in the remaining minutes to concede the game to Table 35.
In the weekend’s other Division I game, Quality defeated the Paintco Strykers 10-1. Scott Spindel, the league’s Golden Boot race leader, finished with a hat trick, as did teammate Aric Jorgensen. Aaron Scott contributed two goals in Quality’s win and teammates Scott Leon Guerrero and Andre Gadia scored one each. Jan-Willem Staman scored the Strykers’ lone goal.
In Division II matches, Yu Tanabe knocked in four goals for the FC Shotguns, as his team steamrolled over Xtra Krispy FC 8-1. Ryan Bosch scored twice for the Shotguns and teammates Patrick Sherman and Naoki Takahashi each scored once. Matt Robles had the lone goal for Xtra Krispy in the 70th minute.

The Rovers blanked Big Blue 7-0 Saturday evening. Eric Redona led the Rovers with two goals. Kyle Legozzie, Sisank Kotwal, Natsuki Recella, Pedro Marmolejo and Robert Sorosane contributed to the Rovers’ tally.
The Ambassadors shut out the United FC Vipers 3-0 behind goals from Jose Untalan, Nick Cabuhat and Samuel Kim.
In the Masters Division, the Rovers defeated the Paintco Strykers 3-1 with goals from Carlos Barajas, Luis Larrazabal, and Jan-Hendrik Meidinger. Rod Hidalgo scored the Strykers’ lone goal.
Chul Park scored the eventual game-winning goal for Family FC in his team’s 2-1 win over Big Blue. Sang Won Park scored Family’s other goal. Pepito Bedia, Jr. was successful with his penalty kick to notch Big Blue’s lone goal in the 55th minute.
Budweiser Soccer League continues Tuesday evening when the Cobras take on Doosan FC in Division I.
