Guam broke the scoring ice in the 26th minute of play on a shot by Colleen Naden, who also had scored during the team’s previous game against Korea Republic. With the advantage, head coach Sam San Gil put in midfielder Megan Hawes for starting defender Shania Spindel and Caylani Estoy for Brianne Leon Guerrero.

Five minutes later, Naden struck again to give Guam the 2-0 lead going into halftime. Four minutes into the second half, Aubrienne Pangindian joined Naden on the scoring wagon for Guam’s third goal of the match. Following the goal, San Gil put in young midfielder Sabrina Kenney for starting defender Faith Acfalle and less than 10 minutes later, Sina Elizabeth Eisenhardt tasted her first international soccer match experience for Guam, going into the game to replace starting defender Sabrina Wiegand. Later, Randi Paulino ran onto the pitch to help Guam in the win replacing first half substitute Estoy.

With the win, Guam is in a better position to qualify from Pool A for the semifinals, with one last hurdle in host country China, P.R., at 7:30 p.m. Thursday Beijing time. The Northern Mariana Islands have one other pool play game against Korea Republic at 4 p.m. Thursday Beijing time. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals.

In Pool B afternoon action, Japan bounced back from an earlier loss to DPR Korea to upend Chinese Taipei 7-0 with goals from seven different girls. Tomo Hirata, who scored for Japan in the team’s loss to DPR Korea, opened scoring in the 11th minute. From there, Nanami Sone, captain Hana Takahashi, Natsuki Tsukamoto, Momoka Takahashi, Riko Ueki and Seira Kojima also scored. Japan has finished Pool B play with a 1-1 record and will await the outcome of DPR Korea vs. Chinese Taipei to find out if the team moves on to the semifinals. DPR Korea will face Chinese Taipei at 4 p.m. Thursday Beijing time, the AFC Web site states.
