GECKOS RALLY TO BEAT SHARKS

The GW Geckos needed extra innings, but they managed to grind out a tough victory at home against the Sanchez Sharks through 9 complete innings.

The GW Geckos rallied twice to defeat Simon Sanchez 7-6 in IIAAG baseball action at the GW field Saturday. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth, GW scored three runs to close the gap to 4-3. GW went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Rico Seaman single brought in two runs. Sanchez tied the game 5-5 in the top of seventh with Julian Flores scoring on a past ball.

In the top of the ninth, Sanchez again scored on a pass ball with Devin Leon coming home making the score 6-5 for Sanchez. Then in the bottom of the ninth, GWs Allen Gillan singled to right center driving home two runs. Gillan’s two RBIs made the score 7-6 and gave GW the victory. GW improves to 5-5 and Sanchez falls to 5-5.

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
