TUNCAP BROS AIM FOR GOLD DOUBLES

Micronesian Games singles gold medalist Brian Tuncap, Jr. will have a chance this weekend to add the Men’s Open Doubles crown with brother Victor to his Men’s 5.0 singles title of the ASC Trust Corporation Family Classic tennis tournament.

PRESS RELEASE – Micronesian Games singles gold medalist Brian Tuncap, Jr. will have a chance this weekend to add the Men’s Open Doubles crown with brother Victor to his Men’s 5.0 singles title of the ASC Trust Corporation Family Classic tennis tournament being held at both the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort and Hyatt Regency Guam tennis courts.

In Week 1 of the tournament, No. 1 seeded Brian Tuncap, Jr. captured the highest skill level division with a 6-2, 2-0(ret) win over fellow junior player Andrew Chung, who had upset No. 2 Anthony John and No. 3 Joshua Cepeda en route to the final.

Chung, however, bagged the Men’s 4.5 Singles title leading 6-2, 1-0 before No. 1 Khay Sung retired with an injury.

In the Men’s 4.0 Singles, No. 1 Mason Caldwell gave up just 10 games in three matches to claim the title over No. 2 Ricardo Estella, 6-2, 6-1 in the final.

Daniel Beauchemin took the Men’s 3.0 Singles title after upsetting junior player and No. 1 seed Gabriel Tan 6-0, 6-1 in the final.

Roman Merletti won the Men’s 2.0 Singles crown with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kenny Cheon in the final.

On the women’s side, Camdyn Nadler won both her matches against Margaux San Nicolas and Kim Ewart in the round-robin format of the Women’s 5.0 Singles competition to claim the title.

San Nicolas claimed the Women’s 4.0 division title with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 2 Alyssa Bristol.

In the Women’s 2.0 Singles division, unseeded Tara Usita-Lee defeated both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded players to win the title. Usita-Lee defeated No. 1 Lisa Brookes 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals and next, defeated No. 2 Janay Masga 6-3, 6-1 in the final.

In Week 2’s junior division matches, Cepeda took the Boys 18 Singles title away from Tuncap with an 8-4 victory in the final. Caldwell won the Boys 16 Singles title with an 8-5 win over Tuncap. Camden Camacho won the Boys 14 Singles title with an 8-3 victory over Edward Chung. Andrew Leng took the Boys 12 Singles title with an 8-1 win over Merletti.

Nadler picked up another championship win in the Girls 18 Singles division, defeating Jenna Panuelo 8-3 in the final. Panuelo, however, won the Girls 16 Singles division with two wins in the round-robin formatted competition. Alyssa Merletti claimed the Girls 14 Singles division with a pair of wins in the round-robin. Dakota Gibson won the Co-Ed 10 Singles Open division with an 8-0 win over Aaeman Sachdev. Sachdev won the Co-Ed 10 Singles Challenger division 4-0, 4-0 over Monti Gibson.

Millie Leon Guerrero won the Women’s 35+ Singles division with two wins against Kathy Bristol and Kathy Alegria in the round robin.

In the Family Women’s Doubles, sisters Camdyn and Ashley Nadler won twice in the round robin for the title, defeated mother-daughter tandems of Kathy and Alyssa Bristol and Celine and Margaux San Nicolas.

Updated schedules and results are available online for download at www.tennisacademyguam.com Registration remains open until Friday for players wanting to compete in the Aged Mixed Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Junior Doubles divisions scheduled to begin Oct. 10.

QUICK HITS

The Figo Islanders 40s women’s softball team took gold in the Senior Softball World Championship in Las Vegas. Figo came out of the loser’s bracket and beat the Arizona Belles 17-3 in the AA division championship game Sunday afternoon.
Other Guam teams that played in the 40s tournament were: Team SOTTA (women’s) and Bud Light Guam, Friars 671 and Sindalun Guahan (men’s).
Sindalu finished a respectable 4th out of 24 AAA division teams.

In Guam’s first time competing in the FIBA Asia Cup, we draw China, Japan, and Mongolia in Group C. Competition begins in 2024. Guam also moves up the FIBA world rankings to #76.
