The Tiyan Titans will make their historic debut in the IIAAG high school football league this weekend against the Guam High Panthers. In just their second year of existence, the Titans look to build experience with a young squad filled with talented underclassmen prospects.

Coach Rowell Carreon and his staff of four coaches look to build a contending team for the upcoming years.

“We have about two players who have high school experience, most of these players are coming from youth football leagues or have no experience at all,” said Carreon. The Titans, unlike other public schools, have full football gear and are practicing at full contact.

“The good characteristics about this team is that they willing to bust their butts. They are willing to put the hard work in; I tell them to do 10 laps, they do 11,” said Carreon. Coach Carreon was unable to make any guarantees for this season, but what he did guarantee is that his team will do their best and improve as the season progresses.

Alfredo Blas, a junior defensive back, said that his team encountered some bumps on the road but everything is working out.

“The practice was rough at first, we were all new. But we’ve been working it out and we are bonding; it’s all starting to come together,” said Blas.

Blas said that his secondary unit is pretty locked down, but they will receive a huge test when they play their first game against Guam High.

“We’ve only had the opportunity to go against our own offense in practice, we will see where we stand when we go up against Guam High.”

Strong safety Anthony Blas will be working double-duty on both sides of the ball when the season starts. As one of the few seniors on the team, Anthony Blas will be logging in major minutes.

“It’s our first year, we will be starting from the bottom and we will be working our way up,” said Anthony Blas. “We are bonding as a team, we are looking more like a family now.”

Sophomore quarterback Kobe Quiambao will take his experience in youth football to the next level. Quiambao, who played for the Hal’s Angels as a youth football player, will be a double threat for the Titan offense. He says that he is more of a modern day quarterback that not only passes, but is dangerous with the run.

“Yeah I’d say I’m more of a Colin Kaepernick or an RG3 type player,” said Quiambao. “Our line is holding up really well, they give me enough time to pass,” he added.

According to Quiambao, the Titans don’t have the size or numbers compared to their opposition. But their lack of size and numbers will not affect their determination and will.

“Coach tells us that size does not matter. If you have a bigger heart, then you can compete with anyone,” said Quiambao.

“It feels good to be part of the first football team from Tiyan. We want to make a name for ourselves and get some respect from the other schools,” said Alfredo Blas.

The Titans home field will be at the JFK field where they will alternate with the Islanders.

Witness the Titans make their debut this Saturday at 7pm at the Guam High field.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
