WOMEN’S INTERMEDIATE 7-A-SIDE

With first-game jitters out of the way, close to 150 women in the Guam Football Association Women’s Intermediate 7-A-Side Recreational League return to the pitch Sunday at the GFA National Training Center.

PRESS RELEASE – With first-game jitters out of the way, close to 150 women in the Guam Football Association Women’s Intermediate 7-A-Side Recreational League return to the pitch Sunday at the GFA National Training Center.

“It feels good to come back to the sport – I haven’t seen some of my teammates since last season,” said Pika Soccer Club’s Cat San Nicolas. “I enjoy playing in the league – it’s fun and I like the camaraderie. Since my first season in the league last year, the team has been anticipating another good matchup against the Queen Cobras, and they did a great job (in our opening match).

“I really love it – now I can’t imagine myself not playing soccer,” added the Toto resident, who is playing in her second intermediate league season and also is an avid paddler.

Like many women in the league, San Nicolas started playing soccer at the request of her children to join and she never looked back after playing a full season.

Pika Soccer Club and the Queen Cobras joined four other teams in the league for opening weekend Feb. 15. In other opening weekend matches, the Heat Wave faced off against Femme Fatale and the Island Eye Specialists/LASIK Lady Eye-Landers played against the Lady Bombers.

The league continues through to March 22. A full schedule is available for download from the GFA Web site at http://www.guamfa.com/all-leagues-womens-7-a-side-results

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
