WOOD BATS LEAGUE TO MAKE A BANG

Wooden bats baseball is here again

PRESS RELEASE – Guam Amateur Baseball Association has teamed up with Strike Zone Batting Cages, to form the 2017 Summer Wood Bat Baseball League to accommodate the islands elite competitive baseball players.

The summer league kicked-off this past Saturday and Sunday with Canyons, Blue Jays, and Rays taking the wins in the first weekend of games. The 10 team league will run through September finishing up with a double elimination Championship Round of games. The league will be played at the Leo Palace Baseball Stadium Saturdays and Sundays 3 pm and 6 pm.

The best and most competitive players on Guam will make up this year’s ten team Amateur League: Last year’s 2016 Spring Amateur League Champion AutoSpot Canyons, 2014 & 2015 Fall Amateur League Champion Rays, 2011 Spring & 2013 Fall Amateur League Champion Talofofo Rangers, 2015 Spring Amateur Champion Barrigada Crusaders, 2016 Fall Amateur League Champion Sumay Chiefs, 2012 Fall & 2012 Spring Amateur League Champion Chalan Pago Amigos. Rounding out the ten teams are the Rooks, Giants, Blue Jays, and Kosrae Speedos.

The Amateur League will be governed by the “Official Baseball Rules” which will also include the Game Norms, Pace of Play using the new “Speed-up Rules” to quicken the pace of the game. On field Officials will enforce minimizing the pitcher/catcher conferences, batters have to keep one foot in the batter’s box during an at-bat, strict timing of offensive and defensive timeouts, speeding up time between half innings, and counting the number warm-up pitches.

This will be Guam Amateur Baseball Association 7th year running hosting Amateur Baseball Leagues on Guam. GABA is a nonprofit organization with a focus on developing adult and youth baseball and fast pitch softball on Guam. GABA has enjoyed a successful 2016 activity season with multiple leagues, tournaments and clinics for baseball and fast pitch softball players of all ages, with over 350 games of baseball and softball that brought out Guam’s older and young talent. 2016 also saw the introduction of the new youth PONY Baseball Leagues.

QUICK HITS

Guam national golf team player Aki Matsuno secured second place at the FCG Hawaii World Series championship.

Matsuno’s second place finish earned him an invitation to compete in the FCG Junior Golf Championship to be held in July 2025.

A junior at St. John’s, he is also currently leading the IIAAG high school All-Island golf competition, chasing the coveted individual high school golf title.

Guam Blooded: College freshman Brianne Graves is currently ranked 5th in the nation in the 103-lb DI women’s wrestling rankings. She just beat the defending All-American.
Bri finished high school in Cincinnati, ranked #2 in the nation before signing with North Central College, which is one of the top wrestling teams in the country.
Her Evangelista grandparents are originally from Yigo.
