FRIARS, SHARKS WRAP UP POOL PLAY WITH WINS

Seedings games set for Thursday and Friday nights

With the seeding games already set coming Day 6 of the 2020 GSPN Preseason Basketball Tournament, the heavily-favored FD Friars kept rolling along with a big 79-21 win over the Tiyan Titans while the Sanchez Sharks controlled the undermanned St. John’s Knights 62-34 Wednesday night at the FD Jungle.

SHARKS 62, KNIGHTS 34

Sanchez finishes pool play at 2-2 with a big win over St. John’s and will now face the Guam High Panthers for 5th place this Friday at 5:30 pm.

Isaiah Malig and Nathaniel Carreon paved the way for the Sharks with 10 points apiece. Knights center Erren Chen had 11 for St. John’s.

The Knights played all four tournament games with the same five underclassmen players: freshmen Cameron Kelley and Mikes Ganeb and sophomores Ben Borja, Adam Cruz and Chen.

FRIARS 79, TITANS 21

The Titans were no match for the high-powered Friars. Clearly looking like the team to beat this year, the deep roster and big-man power FD brings was too much for Tiyan.

FD held Tiyan to a tournament-low 21 points and has blown out the competition so far by an average score of 77-31.

Forward Daryll Robles led the balanced attack with 13 points and Matt Santos added 11 for the Friars. Juan Duenas had eight to lead Tiyan.

The stage is set now for the championship game Friday night at 7 pm between the Friars and the Pool A winners JFK Islanders.

Thursday night

5:30 pm: 7th place Harvest vs. Notre Dame

7 pm: 3rd place Okkodo vs. St. Paul

Friday night

5:30 pm: 5th place Guam High vs. Sanchez

7 pm: 1st place FD vs. JFK

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
