GOOD SHOWING IN FIRST NINJA WARRIOR COMPETITION

Twenty one participants try out home-made course

Deren Perez, Guam’s American Ninja Warrior veteran, hosted the island’s first competition of its kind over the weekend literally right in his own backyard in Dededo.

Self-built to inspire the locals, Perez attracted 21 athletes to give his homegrown course a try.

“I got more than expected and lots of great feedback. The interest is definitely there,” Perez said. “People already ask for training sessions and when the next one is.”

Perez looks to host smaller scaled competitions, perhaps on a quarterly basis, to help build the ninja community on island. He anticipates an eventual annual Guam Ninja Championships.

This year’s UNAA world championships in Las Vegas on July 21st will get it’s first taste of Team Guam. “We have a squad training and ready to take on the course,” Perez added.

With the sport of Ninja on the rise to the Olympics in 2028, it’s a great time to get ninja going on Guam.

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
