ODDS AGAINST WOMEN’S BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Upset against top-ranked Tahiti needed to stay alive

By Jay Leon Guerrero

SAIPAN – The women’s beach volleyball team lost in straight sets to the Solomon Islands Wednesday afternoon in the 2022 Pacific Mini Games. The competition is tough for both men and women in the sport who are going against the best in the Pacific.

The medal contention light for Kristen Serrano and Kendra Byrd is dimming for the ladies and they will need a huge upset in their next match to get out of pool play.

The ladies team will face Tahiti next, a team that is ranked number one in the tournament. An upset win is needed to stay alive and advance to the playoffs.

“We are just going to go all out, go all in and do our best. We’ve got nothing to lose, we are going to do our best,” said Byrd.

During their afternoon match, downpour did not help Team Guam. “The rain made it harder for us to hit the ball to where we wanted it to go. It was heavier so it was an obstacle for us,” said Byrd.

Despite the loss, the mentality is positive and Guam is a fan favorite team.

“It still feels really great to be out here, representing Guam once again,” said Byrd. “Being in the sand again, it amplifies that moment of representing Guam”.

Men’s Beach Volleyball update will be posted later.
