The 2014 Guam International Marathon (GIM) is ready to once again rock the island on April 13. The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) along with the Pacific Islanders Club (PIC), United Airlines and island dignitaries held a press conference at the PIC resort Thursday morning to officially open registration.
GIM Race Director Ben Ferguson headlined the event with the need for Guam to share the “Hafa Adai Spirit” with all our visitors and that it is in Guam’s best intentions to try and spread international involvement, which is something the International Marathon is sure to do.
Last years 2181 participants was impressive, but GVB’s general manager Karl Pangelinan believes Guam can reach higher participants, mostly in the 4000-5000 ranges.
Lieutenant Governor Ray Tenorio was the guest of honor and took the first step by vowing he and his wife would run the marathon in April.
“We have to lead by example if we really want to move in the right direction, and hey, if I can commit to doing a marathon then you can too,” said Tenorio while motivating the crowd.
A short presentation was displayed of the previous GIM before Ferguson allowed Pangelinan, and Tenorio to speak on their behalf.
The event concluded with Tenorio being the first to officially sign up for the GIM via online registration. Pangelinan was soon to follow in signing up for the half-marathon.
Last day to register is April 8, 2014. Registraion prices go up from $60 to $70 after January 24th and then from $70 to $90 after March 14.
