There were a few surprises Friday evening at the Leo Palace Resort track as runners and throwers braved slippery conditions and scattered downpours.  Okkodo’s John Acuna turned heads at the track by posting the top time of the evening for the 400m. Acuna’s time of 54.29 was good enough to edge out Guam High standout Aaron Whitaker, who posted a time of 54.77.  GW’s Michael Blas was third in 57.29.

Whitaker and Acuna competed in separate heats on Friday but both finished well ahead of their nearest competitors. The two have a chance to go head-to-head in the 400m next week when the Bulldogs face the Panthers.

The Okkodo senior is in his first year competing in track and field and has been a surprise talent throughout the season.

“It was the last sport to join before graduation, so I thought I would try it out. I joined (track) for fun but now I’m realizing it’s giving me a future for it,” said Acuna.

Acuna also finished first in the long jump with a jump of 5.84m, which is currently the top jump of the 2013 season. GW’s Chad Faustino was second in 5.37m, followed by teammate Eric Alegre in 4.87m.

“At first it was really hard,” said Acuna on learning the long jump. “I was scared to jump because I might get injured or break something, but when I learned how to do it, it started getting fun.”

In the girls sprints and hurdles, the Daughtry twins, Alexandria and Sierra, continued their strong season. Alexandria won the 100m Hurdles (17.53), 300m Hurdles (51.86), and Triple Jump (9.16m), while Sierra posted the fastest 400m time of the night in 1:07.77 and was second in the 100m Hurdles (18.56).

Christina Francisco of Guam High took first in the 100m, edging out Celine Amparo of Okkodo who finished in 13.95 and 13.96, respectively. Minutes before the 100m, Francisco competed in the 100m hurdles where she placed third behind the Daughtry twins in 19.00.

“I felt really strong. The 100m hurdles was my warmup and when I went into doing the 100m right after, I felt good,” said Francisco. “I just started doing the 100m hurdles two weeks ago and I feel really good about it. I was third place today (in the 100m hurdles) so that just shows my improvement.”

Francisco was also second in the 300m hurdles (53.99) in drizzling conditions. “The rain kinda hindered us, but I went out here and did my best and I guess that’s all that counts,” said Francisco.

Dionisio Top Discus Thrower

The change in venue to Leo Palace allowed for the fielders to finally be able to showcase their skills in the discus throw. The discus event was not able to be held in previous weeks due to the lack of throwing facilities at the Guam High School track.

“It felt amazing to finally go out there and throw,” said GW senior Ray Dionisio. “ I’ve been waiting for about three or four meets and just throwing it now makes you feel good.”

Dioniso has trained for the discus throw for several months and has patiently waited to compete in his favorite throwing event. Friday night he proved he was a dominant force in the throws by posting the top throw with a distance of 38.44 meters.

“It was a good start to the season. I threw that distance last season in my junior year,” added Dionisio.

Dionisio was more than six-meters ahead of his nearest competitor, Guam High’s Lordan Aguon, who threw 32.02m. Sanchez’s Edmer Aguas rounded up the top three in 28.15m.

Dionisio and fellow Gecko senior Cameron Dudkiewicz have been throwing since their freshman year at GW and have dabbled in running events over the years, but have flourished in the throws.

“We’ve been throwing ever since our freshman year so of course we’re going to take it more seriously than running,” said Dudkiewicz. “We’re more focused (in throwing), we know what we want to do, and we know what we can do. We just try to have fun.”

In the girls discus, Sanchez’s Lianna Urbino took the top spot with a throw of 22.20m, followed by Taylor Dudkiewicz of GW (20.25m), and Okkodo’s Frances De Leon (19.29m). Urbino also was the top thrower in the girls javelin with a distance of 27.98m

Guam Blooded: Jared Quenga signs with the McNeese State Cowboys in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Guam national golf team player Aki Matsuno secured second place at the FCG Hawaii World Series championship.

Matsuno’s second place finish earned him an invitation to compete in the FCG Junior Golf Championship to be held in July 2025.
