Despite the recent loss the Sharks’ boys received last Wednesday against the FD Friars, they didn’t let it get to them by coming up big to show the crowd they are still among the league’s best by beating the undefeated JFK Islanders 46-24, as the girls continue to stay undefeated by beating JFK 54-6 here at the Sanchez school.

Starting with the girls, despite many of the absent wrestlers from the JFK Islanders, only one out of 14 matches was successfully continued and that was in the 155 lb. division between Sanchez’ star Jayronne Gandaoli and JFK’s Kaylene Blas.

With receiving only one takedown, Jayronne took full control of Kaylene trying to get in good position on her back as she pinned her in 1:59, giving her the only win of the day that was not a forfeit.

With the loss from last Wednesday, the Sharks seemed to put it behind them. It did take a bit of time for the Sharks but they got the job done with a lot of patience and good takedowns.

The fastest match of the night came in under a minute in the 182 lb. division between JFK’s Ronald Mendiola and Sanchez’ Joe Jay Ignacio. With Mendiola having the strength and height advantage, Ignacio was going to get the show of his life.

Mendiola stayed neutral until he took a quick shot putting Ignacio on his back. Mendiola was too much for Ignacio to handle that he couldn’t escape, pinning him within 34 seconds.

However, with every match taking the same amount of time and some having amazing comebacks, one match in particular had a wrestler at end of his ropes until a late pin gave him the win.

The fan favorite of the night was from the 195 lb. division between Sanchez’ John Rojas and JFK’s Joshua Songsong. It all came down to the wire when Rojas was down 15-7.

Both wrestlers were extremely exhausted as time kept ticking away as Rojas was down 15-7. It seemed to be going well for Joshua responding to John’s shoots by getting escapes and near falls. With Rojas’ arm hurting from the last takedown, he still pushed in the end.

With only 12 second to go, Rojas was able to get the position to push Songsong on his back and held him there. It came close, but the ref called the pin with only five seconds left in the match to give Rojas the win. Rojas got the pin in 5:55 to get the win for Sanchez.

Both teams gave great effort, but the Sharks dominated throughout. The Sharks’ boys improve 5-1 and tied their record with JFK giving them their first loss, 5-1 in the season. This puts them at a three-way tie with the FD Friars, Sanchez Sharks, and JFK Islanders.

As for the girls, the Simon Sanchez Sharks stay undefeated at 5-0

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
