REGISTRATION OPEN FOR KICK THE FAT 5K

Registration is now open for Guam’s largest 5K event, the Pay-Less Super Markets Kick the Fat 5K Run/Walk & Community Fair.

PRESS RELEASE – The Pay-Less Markets Community Foundation is proud to announce their annual“Pay-Less Kick the Fat 5K Run/Walk & Community Fair” scheduled for Saturday, March 15th at Paseo Stadium in Hagåtña. Touted as Guam’s largest 5K event, with over 3,400 participants last year, Pay-Less expects an even larger turnout this year as they celebrate the start of the race with a Zumba warm-up by Synergy studios and fireworks at their 6:00am GO time. The Kick the Fat 5K event includes a community fair immediately following the race.

KTF proceeds will benefit local community organizations – Sanctuary, Inc of Guam, Erica’s House of Hope & Guma Mami through the Pay-Less Community Foundation.

“Year after year, this fun and exciting event has become a tradition for many individuals, families, schools and organizations,” says Kathy Sgro, Chairwoman and Executive Vice President of Pay-Less Supermarkets. “Anticipation and participation for this 5K race continues to grow and we’re proud to continue promoting health and wellness in our community while raising much needed funding and support for local non-profit organizations.”

Registration forms are now available at all Pay-Less Supermarkets (Hagåtña, Sinajana, Oka, Sumay, Dededo, Yigo, Mangilao and Micronesia Mall). Registration forms are also available for download at www.paylessmarkets.com.  Early entry fees are: $7 per person and $25 for a family of four (2 adults max). Race day entry fees are $10 per person.

Dri-fit shirts will be available for the first 3,500 finishers with a KTF reusable bag, refreshments and community fair for all participants. The first male and female finishers will win a $500 Pay-Less gift certificate. Grand raffle prizes include a choice of 2 roundtrip tickets to a U.S. destination or 4 roundtrip tickets to an Asian destination courtesy of Delta Airlines and a Pay-Less shopping spree. In addition, medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each age group, along with a trophy for 1st place male and female overall. Entertainment will be provided with lots of giveaways and prizes and an array of refreshments generously donated by the sponsors of the event.

The course will start in front of Chamorro Village on Marine Corps Drive and runners will run south to Adelup where they will turn around to head back to Paseo. As participants approach Paseo, runners will take a left hand turn into Paseo at the Hagatna Boat Basin, staying to the left of the Paseo Stadium, runners will head towards the Staute of Liberty Park and will cross the finish line just after the canoe house. Runners will then fill in their finisher card, grab a drink of water and walk around to the main Paseo parking lot to collect finisher t-shirts and enjoy the Community Fair.

KTF POSTERPlease be advised that the internal roads of Paseo will be closed from 6pm, Friday, March 14 through 12pm, Saturday, March 15, 2014 to accommodate this event. Marine Corps Drive will also be completely closed to traffic from 4am through 9am on Saturday, March 15, 2014.

The Community Fair will feature various health, fitness and environment organizations hosting booths – demonstrations and offerings will range from health screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar testing), fitness center membership program offerings, eco-friendly tips and information and community-based non-profit group information.

Department of Public Health, American Cancer Society, Ordot Dental Clinic, Adio Chiropractors, Paradise Fitness Center, Guam Diabetes Association, Guam International Marathon, and Synergy Studios will all be hosting a booth. The Community Fair will also include a “Green” Fair with organizations such as IRecycle, Sea Grant, and the UOG Green Army, Guam Coral Reef Monitoring System.

The Pay-Less Community Foundation was created to help improve the quality of life of our people here on Guam. The annual Kick the Fat 5K & Community Fair is one of Pay-Less Community Foundation’s signature events. This year all the proceeds from the 5k will benefiting Sanctuary, Inc., Erica’s House of Hope, and Guma’ Mami, Inc.

QUICK HITS

The Prospects captured the Guam PONY Colt Spring Baseball League (14-16) championship Saturday with a masterful 2-0 win over the Smokies.
Pitchers Gavin Alcantara (5 innings) and Javier Taimanglo (2 innings) combined to throw a no-hitter.
Taimanglo and Juan Carlo Presnell drove in the two runs for the Prospects, and Skyler Paulino had two hits.

Guam Blooded: Joel Toves has signed to play college volleyball for the UC-Merced Bobcats. He is the son of Arianne and Phillip Toves of Dededo and grandson of Ed and Paulette Toves of Malesso.
Joel will be on Guam over the summer to help out with his uncle Al Garrido’s volleyball camps with the Legacy Volleyball Club.
