Despite slight rain and heavy winds, rugby games continued to be played on Saturday morning at the GW field with many teams giving great entertainment in back- to-back games. Saturday was the last day for every team to play for a better place in standings before the playoffs.
Academy 12, Okkodo 12
With a game that came down to the wire, the Bulldogs were able to get a late try in the last 3 minutes of the game in order to get the tie against the Academy Cougars.
The Bulldogs had a great start by getting the ball moving past the aggressive defensive of the Cougars. Scrum after scrum, and hands after hands, the Bulldogs were able to reach the 10-meter in front of the goal area but after nearly losing the ball, Leilani Wai was able to pick it up and push for the first try.
However, the Cougar’s Isabel Flores came rushing in after picking up the ball, from the 50 meter line she sprinted the sideline avoiding every defender and finding her way to the goal area to tie the game at 5-5.
However, the Cougar’s Isabel Flores came rushing in after picking up the ball, from the 50 meter line she sprinted the sideline avoiding every defender and finding her way to the goal area to tie the game at 5-5.
Early In the 2nd half of the game, the Cougars wasted no time to get the lead with Mia Santos getting the try by sprinting from the 40 yard line all the way to the end zone. Mya Sanchez completed the conversion, giving them the 12-5 lead.
With only three minutes left in the game with Okkodo in possession, it came to be a ruck run. Okkodo’s Ke’ann Castro intercepted the ball after a series of hands and was home free to get the try.
After Ke’ann completed the conversion, it tied at game at 12-12.
Okkodo attempted to drop kick the ball far enough for them to retrieve back on defense. With only a minute left with both teams playing with much intensity, neither of them got anywhere close to scoring. Play after play, kick after kick, tackle after tackle, the refs eventually whistled the end of the game. The two matched each other in the end leaving the score a tie at 12-12.
