TRACK SEASON HALFWAY THROUGH

The IIAAG Track & Field League entered the midway point of the season, and while the distance events have formed a predictable finisher order, the sprinting events have had close battles throughout the entire year.

By Derek Mandell

The IIAAG Track & Field League entered the midway point of the season, and while the distance events have formed a predictable finisher order, the sprinting events have had close battles throughout the entire year. Friday evening at Leo Palace track featured another great sprinting exhibition for spectators.

GW junior Alex Dunn had the best performances of the evening by split-seconds both in 100m (12.15) and 200m (23.94).  FD’s Stefan Taitano-Dalrym had the next best time of 12.18 in the 100m and Guam High’s Juwan Jacobs finished in 23.98 in the 200m, both in different heats.

Although he said his start was slower than usual in the 200m, Dunn’s time was the fastest of the season in the IIAAG league. In 2013 he ran 23.81.

“I’m working exceptionally hard at practice and I’m doing my very best to get back to last year’s (performances),” said Dunn. “I thought I did better than before, today, but I’m still striving to do better.”

Dunn, a former soccer and rugby player, has focused his efforts on track and field and tries to stay fit throughout the year.

“In the summer, I go back to my grandparents house in Japan and over there I train a little bit by the rice fields, I run on the roads and do my best to stay conditioned,” Dunn added.

JFK’s Regine Tugade won her first head-to-head matchup this season against GW’s Raquel Walker. Tugade’s time of 26.31 was slightly faster than last week’s performance (26.34). Walker finished later in 27.67. Earlier in the day, Walker ran the 100m in 13.40.

After breaking her personal record in the triple jump last meet, Tugade also had a big performance in the long jump with a distance of 4.95m.

In the 400m, Okkodo’s Celine Amparo ran a personal best of 1:03.07, eclipsing her previous best of 1:03.64 from All-Island last year. GW’s Walker was second in 1:04.95.

Southern’s Ryan Teologo and Christian Gico finished 1-2 on the boys side in 54.28 and 54.92, respectively.

Guam High Hurdles Over the Competition

Guam High junior Christina Francisco dominated the girls hurdles, winning both the 100m and 300m hurdle events. In the 100m hurdles, she finished in 18.56. In the 300m hurdles, Francisco’s time of 50.20 was more than five seconds ahead of the next fastest time by JFK’s Estelita Estay (55.55).

“I’m just racing against time and trying to beat my previous times. So far it’s been working and (Coach) Taitano really helps me at practice (to improve),” said Francisco.

Francisco’s personal best of 17.56 seconds is from the 2013 Far East Track and Field Championships and she is looking forward to surpassing that time this season at this year’s Far East Championships.

“I feel like I’m getting stronger and stronger. Today in my 300m hurdles, I didn’t break 50 seconds, but I’m getting there. Not stuttering at the end was an accomplishment for me.” Francisco added. “I just tell myself to push forward, don’t stutter, leap and go for it. That’s my mentality.”

On the boys side, Zhivoco Smith of Guam High cruised through the 110m hurdles in 16.83 seconds. Zachary Cejoco of Okkodo was a distant second in 18.65.

Smith also posted the fastest time in the 300m hurdles in 44.74, ahead of JFK’s Johnny Quitugua (46.20). Last week, Quitugua ran the 110m hurdles in 16.80.

Sharks’ Big Day on the Field

Adrian Nacino of Sanchez had a huge night in the field by winning both the shot put (11.58m) and discus (31.42m) throws. Nacino’s first shot put throw of the evening was not matched. Lono Brady of Southern threw 11.20m as the runner-up and Okkodo freshman Joshua Miller had the third best throw of 11.05m.

“I was pretty happy because it was a standing throw,” said Nacino, who usually performs the glide technique. “I didn’t know it would go that far for a standing throw, so I’m pretty proud of myself.”

Nacino’s previous best was 11.17m and although he made a big improvement, he looks forward to continuing to produce better throws.

“I still want to pass (my personal bests) and I’m still worried about JFK’s (throwers),” added Nacino.

Lianna Urbino of Sanchez threw 28.10m in the javelin for the farthest throw of the day. Urbino, a senior, has been the best high school javelin thrower since her freshman year, winning All Island in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

JFK’s Joshua Songsong was the top javelin thrower in 38.62 meters. Tommy Borja of GW was second in 37.34m, followed by Guam High multi-sport standout Lordan Aguon in 36.86m.

JFK Stays on Top in Middle Distance

In the middle distance events, Alison Bowman of JFK continued her strong season by winning both the 800m (2:32.35) and 1500m (5:22.74) runs. Bowman edged teammate Genina Criss in the 1500m (5:23.43) and held off Guam High sophomore Taloani Atoigue in the 800m (2:36.04). JFK’s Criss began the evening by winning the girls 3000m run in 12:08.98.

A week after breaking the IIAAG high school 3000m record, JFK’s John Aquino IV made another attempt at the record books by chasing the 1500m of 4:13. Aquino nearly reached his goal and finished in 4:14.09. Austy Hines of Guam High was second in 4:30.22. Aquino would later win the 800m in 2:04.41.

FD’s Nathan Francis Abril edged both JFK’s Karl Almoite and Arthur Owen of Guam High in the 3000m. Abril finished in 10:10.01, Almoite in 10:10.85 and Owen in 10:11.96.
