PRESS RELEASE – The CrossFit Gof Metgot team from Custom Fitness competed in the CrossFit Pacific Regional event on May 22-24, 2015 in Wollongong, Australia. The team consisting of 3 males and 3 females, (Justin Kohn, Brian Quigley, Shane Concepcion, Amy Reyes, Kim Taguacta, & Angela Rosario) that battled their way to a 25th finish amongst 30 of the fittest teams in the Asia and Australian region. This was the first time that any CrossFit boxes on Guam had been invited to compete in a team event for the regional competition.
Over 380 teams from Australia and over 80 teams in Asia competed in the worldwide competition known as the CrossFit Open which took place in February-March 2015. The top 20 teams from Australia and the top 10 teams from Asia were then invited to advance to the Pacific Regionals. 53 athletes from Custom Fitness participated in the Open and helped the team secure a 7th place overall finish in the Asia region.
By qualifying for the regionals, Custom Fitness then chose 6 athletes to make up the Gof Metgot Team. The team also comprised of the “Fittest Male” and “Fittest Female” on Guam namely Justin Kohn & Amy Reyes. Both athletes placed 1st in the male and female divisions for Guam in the CrossFit Open.
This year is the first year that CrossFit HQ combined the Asian and Australian regions to compete to find the top 5 fittest teams to then compete in the CrossFit Games in Carson, California.
“The regionals were a very exciting and tough experience for us. It showed us as a team where our strengths and weaknesses are and what we need to work on when we get back home” said Anglela Rosario.
“The Australian athletes are beasts and much bigger than majority of the Asian teams here but that didn’t stop us from pushing each workout and going out there and showing the world what Guam is made of” said Shane Concepcion.
The team competed in 7 events over 3 days. The workouts challenged the athlete’s abilities to work as a team executing various movements from Olympic lifts, handstand walks, speed, and synchronized partner deadlifts and pull-ups. The team started off slow the first day but were able to get accustomed to the weather and get rid of their jitters by the second day and then pulled off an exciting finish to end their last event in 19th place.
Amy Reyes said regarding the last event, “We just went out there and gave it everything we had. We all worked as a team and focused on what we all needed to do. We knew we needed to do well on the last event and wanted to finish in at least 25th place and we did.”
Custom Fitness Coach, Paul Claros said “we are very proud of our team and how they performed. We are especially proud of how they represented our box but most importantly our island. We knew we were competing against a bigger and stronger region. We wanted our athletes to just go out there, give 190% and come back with more fire to train for next year. We will be back next year and we are going to do better.”
The whole team would like to thank their CFGM family, friends, coaches and the Guam CrossFit Community for their support as well as their local sponsors IT&E, IPE, and Synergy Studios for thier help and support.
