SAN NICOLAS, TOVES COMPLETE FIRST IRONMAN IN TULSA

Young triathletes cover 140 miles

By Cody Sanchez

Always the goal seekers, good friends Nate San Nicolas and AJ Toves successfully completed the Ironman Triathlon in Tulsa, Oklahoma this past weekend.

The 140.6 mile race included a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run. Nate and AJ have been training for this event many months in advance, trying to qualify for the grueling event.

However, Tulsa is far from home, and the 72° water and air temperature is different from a typical down south run and swim. In fact, the two men were biking on the rocky hills of Tulsa. Our athletes did not fret and completed the race within 13 hours and 40 minutes, which is not far from the average time it takes to complete an Ironman.

San Nicolas’ time was 13:40:54 while Toves did it in 14:55:33. The winner completed it in 9:22:59.

Nate and AJ are a part of Team Z, a nutrition and athletic group of young athletes who train for a multitude of sports. The two are Father Duenas Alumni, having many experiences in competitive sports before they
began training for the Ironman.

The usual pacing of this race is different from person-to-person. AJ is 28 years old and Nate is 26, being so young and representing Guam on a large scale is definitely not only a win for them, but also for the many young athletes who are inspired to do big things with their talent. That is The Team Z mentality!

Nate San Nicolas completed his first ever Ironman event in Tulsa with grandparents Simon and Lou Sanchez there for support.
