The 2022-2023 Track Season is now underway with the first meets taking place on Thursday and Friday at the JFK Track. It was the first meet of the Interscholastic Sports Association League and athletes had their initial taste of the competition.
The league is growing and to avoid having students stay late at the track, the league decided to run meets on Thursdays and Fridays with five schools competing in each meet.
Athletes were getting their first simulation of their events and the goals for each athlete is to make the all-island showdown in March.
As expected, All-Island medalists from last year continued to place high in the rankings and some new athletes knocked on the door to join the party.
Kent/Calvo lead JFK
JFK junior Hugh Kent started his season off with a win in the 3000 meter race with a PR time of 9:38. Kent later finished first in the 1500 meter event with a time of 4:23.
Kent said his role in the team changed now that he is an upperclassmen. “We have lots of freshman on the team so now my role is different,” said Kent. Kent said he’s contributing to the squad by helping to lead the new team members.
Kent is looking forward to new challenges this season. JFK has dominated the long distance races, but Kent said he will be looking to push himself with middle and short distance races.
Kent’s teammate, senior Maria Calvo, has goals for her final year. “Most of our girls are returnees so I feel our chances are good this season. We just need to continue to work hard and improve each week,” said Calvo.
Calvo finished the long jump in first place with a distance of 4.73 meters. “My goal is to try and break the high school record which is over 5 meters,” said Calvo.
Coming in second in the girls long jump was Taylor-Ann Santos from Academy with a distance of 4.29 meters. Academy also won the 4×100 relay.
Titans stronger than ever
The Tiyan Titans track team is looking to move up the rankings with a strong contingent. Dean Masnayon, a senior, went off on Friday with victories in three of his four events.
Masnayon was first in the long jump, 100 meter, and 200 meter sprints on Friday. “I was nervous because it’s the first meet of the season, but things are going great so far. I recorded a PR in the long jump, and I’m looking forward to the sprints this season,” said Masnayon.
“Tiyan is a team to look out for this season,” said Masnayon. “We haven’t done well in the past, but this year we look to come out strong.”
Zoey Indalecio won the girls discus for Tiyan with a distance of 19.85 meters, a full two meters ahead of the field.
FD Friar seniors Brendon Cellona and Christian Arriola were victorious in their respective events. Cellona won the discus event for the with a distance of 34.80 meters. Arriola won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.31.
