The Harvest Eagles dragged it out with the Guam Adventist Academy Angels in IIAAG Boys Volleyball League action Saturday night as the game went to three sets with the Eagles coming out on top 25-18, 17-25, and 25-22 at the Harvest Gym.
Both Harvest and GAA were hungry for a win after coming off of tough losses earlier in the week, and it showed from beginning to end.
In the first set it seemed that a little pre-game jitters were getting the best of the Eagles as they committed a couple of senseless errors allowing the Angles to take a 4-0 lead at the beginning of the first set. However, GAA returned the favor by committing four consecutive errors giving the Eagles the lead 7-4. On the next play Jordan Javellana would give the offense a boost nailing a kill putting Harvest up 8-4.
After a slew of unforced errors made by both teams, GAA’s Dorien Peele answered back with two kills cutting down the Eagles lead to 15-11. However, the miscommunication between the Angels led to unforced errors giving the Eagles the lead 20-15. Several plays later Eagles Marlon Evans would close the set with a dink giving Harvest the first set 25-18.
In the second set Harvest started off slow again, and would pay the price as GAA began to pick up momentum behind Peele and teammate Riley Jones. Jones would set the momentum for the Angels starting things off with a slick kill that landed off the hands of a Harvest defender giving GAA the lead 7-4. Peele would step it up big time for the Angels, hitting four straight kills that left the Eagles defense clueless giving the Angels the edge 21-16. Jones would later add to the killing spree with two more kills of his own extending the lead 23-16. Harvest would commit two straight out balls giving GAA the second set 25-18 pushing the game into a third set.
Javellana once again would ignite the Eagle defense scoring a kill early to push momentum in the Eagles direction. GAA would not go down so easily as Jones and Peele would keep the Angels in the game with Jones hitting an ace and Peele nailing a kill to give GAA the lead 11-10. Once again though both teams managed to keep making careless errors keeping the game tight at 17-17. Javellana spiked a key kill giving the Eagle’s the lead 18-17, and thanks to errors made by the Angels extended the lead 20-17. Evans would later seal the deal for the Eagles with another dink winning the third set and game for Harvest 25-22
“We’ve been going through a lot with the losses, but we overcame it with communication,” said Javellana who believes that with this win it would push Harvest in the right direction. “It gives us momentum making us hungrier for more, and makes us work harder”, added Javellana who led Harvest with seven kills.
