FUTSAL: QUALITY JUMPS OUT ON TOP

Fast-paced play and thunderous strikes rocked the Guam Sports Complex Gym in Harmon with opening round matches of the 2015 Budweiser Futsal League with Quality Distributors pulling ahead as the Day 1 leaders.

PRESS RELEASE – Fast-paced play and thunderous strikes rocked the Guam Sports Complex Gym in Harmon with opening round matches of the 2015 Budweiser Futsal League.

Quality Distributors holds the top spot in the rankings with two wins in as many matches, first defeating Doosan FC 10-4 Aug. 5 and next, Tumon 9-2 Sunday. In the team’s victory over Doosan FC, Scott Spindel led all scorers with a hat trick and teammates Nick Roberto, Bradley Miller, and Joshua Mendiola each scored twice. Paul Long scored Quality’s other goal. Romaine Loney scored twice for Doosan and teammates Jason Sugimoto and Thaddeus “TJ” Atalig also scored.

Roberto, Spindel and RC Salas each scored twice in Quality’s win over Tumon. Brett Maluwelmeng, James Bush, and Phillip Ogo also scored in the win. Eyuel Yohannes and Michael Sypien scored for Tumon.

In other matches, Guam Shipyard blanked Doosan 12-0 with four goals from Mark Chargualaf, two each from Christopher Reyes and Donald Weakley, and one each from Andre Gadia and Anthony Babauta. Shipyard’s other two goals came on Doosan own goals.

The Strykers edged the Crushers 9-6 with three goals from Min Choi and two each from Hiro Asoshina and Marcus Lopez. Ross Awa and Christian Dickson also scored for the Strykers. Joshua Pangelinan, Jonathan Odell, and Christian Schweizer each scored two for the Crushers.

The Southern Cobras also defeated the Crushers in Round 1 play. Ashton Surber led all scorers with a double hat trick in the Cobras’ 11-4 win. Donovan Reyes, Jan Flores, Gerald Aguon, Fred Alig, Jr., and Peter Santiago also scored for the Cobras. Odell, Nicolas Cabuhat, John Guerrero, and Tony Flores scored for the Crushers.

League defending champions, the Rovers, will kick off its futsal season at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday against Doosan.

The JFK Islanders won the first ever Memorial Weekend High School Basketball Tournament.

The All-Tournament selection were Zhion Macapinlac JFK, Darwin Ecijan JFK, Matthew Quinata Southern, and Malcom Fernandez Tiyan.

JFK’s Collin Rillamas was named tournament MVP.

The Prospects captured the Guam PONY Colt Spring Baseball League (14-16) championship Saturday with a masterful 2-0 win over the Smokies.
Pitchers Gavin Alcantara (5 innings) and Javier Taimanglo (2 innings) combined to throw a no-hitter.
Taimanglo and Juan Carlo Presnell drove in the two runs for the Prospects, and Skyler Paulino had two hits.
