The Sanchez Sharks continued to dominate the IIAAG Wrestling League with wins Saturday afternoon against the Tiyan Titans and Southern Dolphins. Almost every Shark wrestler taking the mat produced wins as both the girls and boys improved to 5-0 for the season.

“We have an excellent coaching staff that helps us. They’ve been doing this just about their whole life; they show that they care and put alot of effort in teaching us,” said 113-lbs wrestler Gavin Whitt.

Whitt won both his matches on Saturday, one hour via points and the other via pinfall. The Shark boys team defeated Tiyan 33-18 and later defeated Southern 42-12.

Whitt is 4-0 thus far this season and is looking forward to continuing his win streak to help the boys reclaim the IIAAG title which has been held by the FD Friars for the passed two seasons.

“Definately looking forward to our meet next week against FD. For my weight division, Tiyan and FD have good wrestlers. So I’m actually excited for next week and the challenge,” said Whitt.

Girls have a quest for six

In the girls division, the Sharks are on that ‘quest for six’ to continue the legacy. The Shark girls are on pace to accomplish their goals, defeating Tiyan 43-12 and then later defeating Southern  48-18. Jackie Brub, a 155-lbs wrestler for Sanchez, remained undefeated for the season.

“Our coaches are a good reason for our success. They work us hard and teach us alot of techniques we don’t know,” said Brub. “They are also important for us because they push us and motivate us to do our best.”

Tony Aquino is the head coach for Sanchez and is assisted by Mariano Aquino. There are several other former wrestlers who volunteer their time to help out the program.

“There’s a lot of pressure, but pressure is everywhere. The team will just continue to work hard and practice,” said Brub regarding any pressure to keep the girls’ dynasty alive.

Showdown next week

The Sanchez boy’s and the FD Friars are scheduled to take the mats next week Saturday at 3pm at the FD Phoenix Center. Both teams will enter the contest with undefeated records at 5-0. What’s on the line? A regular season title and the rights to host the all-island meet.
