BUBBA ON FIRE TO START JUNIOR SEASON

22-game hit streak

UCLA junior centerfielder Bubba Nickles has picked up where she left off from a year ago, carrying over a hit streak that has extended to 22 games as of Friday night.

Nickles, who has CHamoru blood with deep roots on Guam, is batting .417 and leads the second-ranked Bruins in home runs (5), RBI (16) and slugging percentage (.889) as UCLA has raced out to an 11-0 record and sits right behind top-ranked Florida State in the country.

After a sweep in a Hawaii tournament last week, the success has continued this weekend, including a big 7-1 win over the 4th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

Bubba and her parents Ted and Natalie visited Guam in the off season last August where Bubba put on a softball clinic and also participated in the APL Women’s Softball All-Star Game at Guerrero Field in Paseo.

UPDATE: Bubba’s streak ended at 24 games!

QUICK HITS

Guam’s Wayne Blas completed his 13th Boston Marathon and 38th marathon overall.
The island’s record holder in the distance, Blas finished this year in 2:35:21.
“I’m very happy with this result because seven months ago, I was sidelined with a stress fracture that kept me out for three months. No running! To come back on an abbreviated marathon build and finish one of the toughest races strong and healthy was a big win for me.”
His time of 2:29:38 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon and World Marathon Majors Age Group Championships stands as the Guam National Record.
